Boron deficiency

Boron (B)

B is solid metalloid with atomic number-5 and atomic weight-10.811. Plants absorb B in the form of BO33- B4O72-. B is an immobile micronutrient in plants.

Function

In plants it is required in order to perform several functions
  • Uptake and utilization of calcium.
  • Translocation of carbohydrates.
  • Cell differentiation and cell elongation.
  • Pollen germination.
  • Membrane functioning.
  • Nucleic acid synthesis.
  • Hormone function.

Deficiency symptoms

Depending upon the species and age of the plants, symptoms of B deficiency may vary considerably.
  • Deficiency symptoms appear most on the young leaves and terminal buds.
  • Base of young leaves blade become necrotic.
  • Stems become stiff and brittle.
  • Plants become highly branched due to loss of apical dominance.
  • Because of inhibited cell division, shoot apices become necrotic.
  • Fleshy parts of the plants, such as, roots, tubers and fruits show abnormalities due to breakdown of internal tissues.
